Even more than its predecessor, the 2009 Pilot is solid and well behaved: about as refined as any crossover SUV is likely to get. Smooth operation and quiet running are the rule, though the Pilot does emit a light roar on hard acceleration, and tire whine may be heard on certain surfaces. Ample engine response is accompanied by excellent automatic-transmission behavior, with brief delays to downshift. At times, though, the Pilot feels a bit heavy.
Handling & Seating
Handling falls on the ordinary side, but that's hardly a surprise for a vehicle of this nature. Sportiness is not what you get from an SUV, crossover or otherwise, from Honda or any competitor. Ride comfort takes precedence, and on that score the Pilot proves satisfying. Pavement separators and other obstructions are noticeable, but not troublesome. Surprisingly, a touch of torque steer (slight pulling to the side) occurred when flooring the gas pedal of a Touring model at highway speed.
Gauges are somewhat strange in appearance, but easy enough to read. The center stack has quite a "busy" appearance, but the optional navigation system's crisply clear screen is high-mounted and deep. Front space is considerable, with supportive seats. Second-row occupants have adequate legroom and should be comfortable, except for a hard center seatback. The third row is a lot less inviting, but cargo space behind it is substantial. Entry/exit is compromised a bit by tall sills.
Production of the 2009 Pilot began in mid-April 2008 at the plant in Alabama, which also turns out Odyssey minivans. The starting price is the same as last year: $27,595 (plus destination charge) for a Pilot LX. The EX model stickers for $30,395, while the new Touring Edition is priced at $36,795. Variable Torque Management all-wheel drive (VTM-4) adds $1,600 to each price. Sales began on May 22.
