The F-150 is available in three cab styles, four box configurations, and seven trim levels. In recent years, the base XL has received little love, but it and the mid-level XLT will become the stars of the show for 2009. The off-road-oriented FX4 and sporty STX will still have devoted followers; however, the high-end Lariat and King Ranch models, along with the new ultra-luxury Platinum model, might find themselves spending time on the bench.
Inside Info
Inside, the console has been lengthened by about two inches. That’s big enough for two laptop computers. Also, the console features ridges that allow it to be converted into a file cabinet. Other storage areas abound, including a bin on top of the instrument panel and spaces specifically designed for cell phones, MP3 players, PDAs and gate access cards.
Access to the F-150’s large pickup bed is eased by a tailgate step that made its debut on the F-250 Super Duty. Also, newly available side steps slide out from under the box and replace wheel rims as step stools for bed access.
F-150s will be available with Ford’s popular SYNC voice-activated system for cell phones and sound systems. With portable satellite-based navigation systems going for less than $200, it’s unlikely the SIRIUS Travel Link or the voice-activated navigation system will see many takers. An available Sony 700-watt sound system boasts 10 speakers. Other options include a bed extender that adds more capacity for extra-long gear. A cargo management system on 6.5-foot Styleside trucks can be had with cargo-holding cleats, load bars, bed dividers and double-walled, insulated tool bins than can double as beverage coolers. Another option is the lockable steel storage box that can accommodate more than 26 cubic feet of equipment.
As soon as the Ford coaches allow us in the game, we’ll sample the F-150 and give you the full report. Just like any Manning, don’t count the F-150 out of the game until the final buzzer sounds. (www.fordvehicles.com)
