Driving and Interior Impressions
2009 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 interior

The Z06 rides the same (105.7-inch) wheelbase as other Corvette models, but it differs in its wheels, tires, brakes and some suspension components. The ride is firm—less comfortable than the standard Corvette—but not harsh. That litany of numbers that we began with includes a Velcro-like 1.04 maximum lateral grip. The Z06’s well-planted feel and handling capabilities exceed the need of even enthusiast drivers by a country mile, on public roads. To really plumb the car’s potential, access to at least the occasional open track day should be considered a must by Z06 owners. You can certainly enjoy the Z06 in day-to-day driving but, like a racehorse ridden on a bridle path, there’s a sense of profound, untapped potential.

Corvette interiors have taken a rap over the years as lagging behind the rest of the car’s world-class standard, and some of its in-class competition. The cabin in the 2009 Corvette Z06 continues to close the gap. It’s nicely crafted, especially with optional, two-tone leather applied to door skins and dashboard (as well as the standard leather seats). Full gauges are in full view, and all switchgear is easy to access. New Z06-specific red and titanium interior features color-matched lower instrument panel and door panels. Behind the Corvette’s two seats is a cargo area accessed by hatch back. The liftover is high, but the payoff is big: a comfortable, 22 cubic feet of space—enough room for luggage or golf clubs. The available (but surprisingly optional) list includes a luggage shade to shield the cargo bay from inquiring eyes and a telescoping steering wheel. More new-for-2009 additions include standard steering wheel audio controls, standard variable steering ratio, and standard power hatch pull-down.

Bottom Line

One final number: 2009 Z06 pricing is $73,255 (including $850 destination charge). The Z06 follows in the Corvette’s footsteps as a bona fide performance bargain. While the “base” model still takes the best, bang-for-the-buck award and makes the most sense for the most people, the Z06 plays to a slightly different audience. Though happy to play the role of daily driver, it’s one step less civilized; one step closer to a racecar. The top Corvette makes an interesting contrast to its competition. Neither cold and clinical nor exotic and fussy, it delivers the goods with an approachable, All-American, V8 swagger.
