Description:
Five years since its original debut as one of the first compact crossovers, the 2009 Pontiac Vibe hits the streets in style, with more versatility and cargo-carrying capacity, and options to boot. With seating that can accommodate four adults, the new Vibe, sharing platform and powertrain choices with its Toyota Matrix cousin, comes in base, front-wheel-drive mode fitted with Toyota’s 1.8-liter, 132-hp four mated to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. Base model buyers can option up to a 2.4-liter, 158-hp four-cylinder, which is standard on all-wheel-drive and GT models. Buyers of the 2.4 on either base or GT models can opt for a 5-speed automatic. Front suspension in all models is the same, MacPherson strut. EPA estimates fuel economy to range from 26 city/32 highway for a 1.8 FWD manual to 20/26 for an AWD automatic. Rear suspension varies according to model choice. The base model gets a torsion beam setup, while AWD and GT models have an independent, multi-link rear suspension. The base, front-wheel-drive model starts at $15,895. AWD models begin at $19,495, while the sportier GT version starts at $19,895. The Vibe offers an agile, yet stable ride, and a lot of utility and content, in a small package at a smallish price.
