Description:

Genesis means the formation of something, which suggests a new beginning or at least a new direction for the fast-growing South Korean automaker, Hyundai. With two company-first offerings—rear-wheel-drive and an available V8—Genesis is poised to move Hyundai into new, upscale territory even while keeping with its reputation as a value-leader. Pricing starts at $33,000 (including destination charge) for the Genesis V6 and $38,000 for the V8 version. Working with continuously variable valve timing, the V6 makes 290 hp and 264 lb.-ft. of torque while the new V8 makes 370 hp and an estimated 333 lb.-ft. of torque. A 6-speed Shiftronic automatic transmission mates with the V6, while the V8 gets a 6-speed automatic with Shiftronic manual control. Hyundai claims the V8 model can accelerate to 60 mph in under 6 seconds. Cabin interior is said to be larger than those of the BMW 5 Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Genesis suspension includes Amplitude Selective Dampers, the same technology used by Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz models. Like most Hyundai models, the Genesis has standard Electronic Stability Control. An eight-airbag package includes front and rear seat-mounted side-impact airbags, plus roof-mounted side curtain airbags for all outboard occupants. Each Genesis halts with all-disc antilock brakes.
