Acceleration to 60 mph takes a leisurely 12.8 seconds. Smart anticipates an EPA gas-mileage estimate of 33 mpg in city driving and 40 mpg on the highway—frugal, but not quite phenomenal for a microcar. Premium-grade gasoline is recommended.

Some may scoff at the fortwo, or worry about its safety. Naturally, the smart people believe sufficient numbers will gravitate toward the car, drawn by price, fuel economy, and quality that results from Mercedes-Benz engineering.
Smart addresses safety concerns head-on, pointing to the car's ability to withstand a full series of crash tests: front, rear, and side impacts, as well as dynamic rollover and compatibility testing.
"This is a lifestyle vehicle," said David Schembri, president of Smart USA. Noting that it "brings a smile to people's faces," Schembri calls the fortwo a "perfect car for teenagers" and first-time buyers, but lack of a back seat diminishes its utility unless purchased as a second or third car.
In the earlier ZAP coupe, the harsh-shifting transmission was the most onerous obstacle. That's still the case.
