Notable options include side curtain airbags, and a new "Technology Package" that includes a Bluetooth hands-free phone system, XM satellite radio and a vehicle security system.
Performance
Those looking for a serious off-roader should consider the NISMO package, with steel skid plates to protect the oil pan and transmission, a locking rear differential, and specially tuned Bilstein shocks. The NISMO is available on either the King Cab or Crew Cab and with either two- or four-wheel drive.
The Tennessee-built Frontier offers excellent ride comfort, though certain surfaces set off a minor harmonic vibration in the rear suspension. The seats are comfortable and supportive. Unless the Crew Cab's driver is overly tall, there's more than plenty of rear legroom. The instruments are clear and readable, but may be a bit small for middle-age eyes.
One big complaint about the Frontier is its rather huge 43.6-foot turning circle. For comparison, the Toyota Tacoma can make a U-turn on a street that's just 36-feet wide. Several times we radically overestimated the Frontier's turning ability and had to stop, back up and try again. The first time it happened, we wondered if a tire was low on pressure, but no. The BFGoodrich Radial Long Trail T/As offered good steering feel and very good grip; it's just that with a 20.4:1 steering ratio you need to plan ahead for tight turns.
For most pickup buyers the Nissan Frontier is just the right size and can do just about any job that doesn't require the 101st Airborne or a tank. (www.nissanusa.com)
