2008 lincoln mkx crossover suv

Many desire the capability and image of a luxury sport utility vehicle, but dislike the reduced maneuverability and fuel economy of a full-sized SUV. Even midsized SUVs have inflated to the point that they’re more than a tight fit in the average garage or mall parking space and burn fuel at a prodigious pace. For those who don’t tote a lot of people or tow extra-heavy trailers, these are too much vehicle. Instead, they need a smaller vehicle that doesn’t sacrifice style, comfort, room for stuff, or the ability to haul. That’s why Lincoln’s first crossover SUV, the Lincoln MKX, is just right for many. And why it was a sales hit in its first year. (“Crossover SUV” is what car writers call vehicles that are not traditional, truck-based SUVs, but aren’t station wagons either.)

Svelte Styling

The Lincoln MKX is much more svelte than its Navigator sibling, but its second-row seats fold forward to carry large items: more than 68 cubic feet worth. Few Navigator owners will exceed the Lincoln MKX’ ability to tow a 3,500-pound trailer. The Lincoln MKX also gets significantly better fuel mileage: Its EPA rating for the front-drive version is 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway, compared to the Navigator’s 12/18 marks.

All this makes the Lincoln MKX an excellent choice for empty nesters, the child-free, and those with small grandchildren. It’s perfect for two-person getaways, four-person trips to dinner, serious shopping, “antiquing”, daily commuting and more.

Features and Powertrain

The Lincoln MKX, which is assembled in Oakville, Ontario, was introduced as a 2007 model. For ’08, new standard features include Lincoln SYNC, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, a reverse sensing system to help ease tight parking maneuvers, and SIRIUS satellite radio. New options are highlighted by a voice-activated navigation system and 20-inch chrome-clad wheels. Two new packages are also offered for 2008, a Limited Edition package and a Monochrome Limited Edition package.

The Lincoln MKX is powered by a potent 265-horsepower 3.5-liter DOHC V-6 engine coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. Its standard stability control, anti-lock brakes, front seat-mounted side airbags and side curtain airbags helped the Lincoln MKX earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick rating. The Lincoln MKX offers notably better ride quality and less road noise than its fraternal twin, the Ford Edge. This is accomplished with enhanced suspension tuning, better tires, a thicker dash pad, laminated windshield, thicker side glass, and sound-deadening material welded behind exterior trim panels. Platform-mates include the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln MKZ, Mazda6 and CX9.
