2008 Land Rover LR2
New baby Rover means business

All told, you can expect a totally pleasant experience. Trouble is, the LR2 doesn't seem at all like a traditional off-road vehicle. Neither did its Freelander predecessor, but judging by this new model's specifications and equipment, the LR2 should be a businesslike SUV with true off-roading potential. Yet, despite the presence of such adventurous accessories as Terrain Response, with its gradient-release and hill-descent components, the LR2 comes across more like a relatively mild-mannered crossover than a serious trekking machine.
Still, the latest Land Rover rides comfortably and appears solidly built—clearly more substantial than the short-lived Freelander. Steering/handling is as capable as any competitive SUV. Performance won't set any records, but it's clearly on par with the competition.
One exception to the silent-running theme occurs with the driver's window rolled down at road speed, when some awful wind chatter might have to be endured. Gas mileage ranks around average, with an expected estimate from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of 16 mpg in city driving and 23 mpg on the highway.
An LR2 can be driven home for $34,700 (including destination charge), which is far below the price of Range Rover models. Seven airbags, a keyless starter and a two-part panoramic sunroof are standard, but a navigation system and rear park-distance control are optional. Audio buffs might opt for the Premium Audio System with Dolby Pro Logic II 7.1 Surround Sound.
A $3,500 Technology Package includes the navigation system, Dolby audio, and Sirius satellite radio. For $1,050, the Lighting Package adds bi-xenon and adaptive headlights, approach/puddle lights, plus a memory driver's seat and outside mirrors. A Cold Climate Package also is offered, including a heated windshield, front seats, and windshield-washer jets. (www.landroverusa.com)
