2008 Hyundai Azera
Premium midsize sedan still reigns as Hyundai's flagship

Suspension enhancements for 2008, including softer bushings and a quicker steering rack, were intended to improve ride and handling. Hyundai claims the Azera suspension is "even flatter through turns and more compliant over bumps." That news is welcome, because the earlier Azera did not ride quite as gently as some other members of its class. Handling may be a bit more crisp in the Azera, but the Sonata behaves impressively for fewer dollars. Azera steering is on the light side, but produces reasonably good control.
Body-colored rocker panels and 17-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels are now installed on the GLS sedan, while a power sunroof and side mirror turn-signal indicators become standard on the Limited model. An Infinity seven-channel 315-watt XM/CD/MP3 audio system entertains Limited occupants. Available for the Limited is an LG touch-screen navigation system, coupled with a 605-watt Infinity "Logic 7" 12-speaker surround sound system. The optional GLS Premium Package now includes leather heated front seats and a sunroof.
In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash testing, the Azera scored four stars (out of five) for frontal impacts, and five-star for side impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Azera its top ("Good") crash-test rating for frontal offset impacts, but side impacts scored only "Acceptable."
Interior Comfort
Pleasant but unpretentious inside and out, the Azera is more eye-catching than the Sonata, but more expensive, too. With the step-up 3.8-liter engine, expect near-stunning acceleration from a standstill; but the automatic transmission may occasionally give a slight hiccup. Yes, you get more zip than a Sonata provides. Still, that family-focused midsize sedan performs with nearly effortless responses, even with a four-cylinder engine rather than the available V-6.
Illuminated electroluminescent gauges, if installed, are great. Comfortable seats offer plenty of room, front and rear. Rear leg space qualifies as huge; elbow and head room rank very good too, though the center rear has a hard seatback—a common failing in today's back seats. Visibility is unmarred in any direction.
