Bold Design, Convenient Seating
Expedition's styling, inspired by Ford's F-Series pickup, begins with a bold chrome grille and a raised power dome hood. Dual-beam headlamps with integrated side-marker lights step up and wrap into the fenders. Smooth flanks and large wheel lips frame its big wheels and tires. The seven available wheel designs include 20-inch six-spoke chrome alloys wearing P275/55-R20 all-season tires.
Even the base XLT offers six-way power driver's seat, and a 10-way-power driver's seat comes with optional leather trim. One-lever action, kneel-down, 40/20/40-split second-row seats are the first in Expedition's class to fold flat with the load floor to offer extra cargo space and easy third-row access. A class-exclusive Center Slide section can be moved forward nearly 11 inches to give the front passenger easy access to a child in the second row. The second row is also available with two captain's chairs and a walk-through passage between them.
The 60/40-split third-row seats, optional in XLT and standard in other models, offer best-in-class legroom and fold flat into the floor to optimize cargo space without having to remove a heavy, cumbersome rear seat. A hugely convenient option is a first-in-class PowerFold third-row seat that folds flat with the touch of a button.
Powertrain and Chassis
All Expeditions are powered by a 300-hp SOHC, 24-valve 5.4-liter Triton V-8 that delivers a smooth and muscular 300 hp and 365 lb.-ft. of torque through the standard 6-speed automatic transmission, and can tow up to a best-in-class 9,200 lbs. Four-wheel-drive models have 2-speed transfer cases with optional electronic shift-on-the-fly capability, controlled by a dash-mounted rotary knob. In low range, it shifts the engine's electronic throttle control to a special off-road calibration for more precise torque management in conditions such as a sandy hill climb or a slippery uphill tow.
Their fully boxed frames share much in common with the F-150's. Both front and rear suspensions are fully independent, and Ford's patented design allows the drive shafts to pass through the frame rails to maximize interior space and lower the center of gravity for better ride and handling. Monotube shocks all around enable precise tuning for a refined ride. The variable boost steering pump reduces steering effort for easy maneuverability at low speeds and a firm, responsive feel at highway speeds. Large brake calipers and rotors provide excellent stopping power, while a dual-bore master cylinder gives confident pedal feel.
