2008 Ford Escape
Less is more

There's enough legroom to hold six footers with ease up front. Escape will also fit 2-3 adults in back and, with some compromise between front and back passengers, six footers can be accommodated in both rows. Cargo capacity in Escape is a strong point. The liftgate door opens to hold a generous, 29.2 cubic feet of gear. An available pullout screen shields your gear from inquiring eyes. The back seats split 60/40 and fold nearly flush with the load floor, expanding storage space to as much as 66.3 cubic feet.
Escape is offered in three trim levels-XLS, XLT and Limited-and two platforms, front- or 4-wheel drive. The three engine choices include a 2.3-liter 153 hp four-cylinder, a 3.0-liter 200 hp V-6, and a 133 hp gas/electric hybrid. Prices start at $19,245 for a base model with front wheel drive; hybrids begin at $25,740. The top-of-the-line Limited version with the 3.0-liter six and 4WD is $25,995, delivered.
Models
Ford expects that half of all Escape buyers will opt for the V-6. Linked to a four-speed overdrive automatic transmission, it offers good power and can be equipped to tow as much as 3,500 lbs. when called upon. The methods by which the EPA calculates estimated gas mileage change as of the 2008 models. Shoppers should expect lower (but more accurate) numbers on the stickers. Our test drive was a testimonial to this. EPA says that the Escape 4WD with 3.0-liter V-6 should get about 17 miles per gallon in the city and 22 on the highway. We logged 1,000 miles of largely highway travel with the 3.0 Limited, and averaged 22 mpg.
The Intelligent 4WD system is an automatic, on-demand setup, requiring no input from the driver. Engine torque is channeled from front to rear wheels as needed to enhance traction. Escape has independent front and rear suspension, and a new, speed sensitive, electronic power steering system. The small SUV has good road manners and a stable feel. Ride quality is firm, but stops short of being harsh. As is common in utility vehicles, drivers lose a small amount of their straight back view due to the rear seat head restraints, but there is thankfully no rear mounted spare taking a bite out of the backlight, and visibility is generally good throughout.
After selling more than 1,000,000 units, the Ford Escape has a veteran's perspective on the compact SUV market. The sands have been shifting steadily over the years, so the landscape that the 2008 Escape rolls onto is far different than the first Escape encountered. The new Escape is a strong player in an expanding segment. The combination of truck-like looks and car-like comfort should attract a lot of interest from all SUV and crossover shoppers.
