The engine is a potent 265-hp 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V-6 that’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine makes peak torque of 250 lb.-ft., so a properly optioned Edge can tow trailers weighing up to 3,500 pounds. The Edge comes standard with front-wheel drive, but an advanced all-wheel-drive system is optional. When the AWD system senses that a front tire is spinning, not only does it shift torque rearward, it also splits it side-to-side to get power to the tires with the most grip. Front-drive versions get 24 miles per gallon in EPA’s highway testing.
All Edges feature rear seats that both recline and fold forward in a 60/40 split. This provides a level load floor for large items for carrying equipment. With the available forward-folding front passenger seat, the Edge can transport eight-foot-long items.
Interior and Safety
As rearward visibility is limited since we don’t have eyes on the backs of our heads, an excellent option is the Reverse Sensing System that audibly warns drivers of unseen objects when the vehicle is in reverse.
Another appealing option is the “Vista Roof,” which makes the Edge the opposite of a glass-bottom boat. A huge power-opening moonroof gives the feeling of driving a convertible but without the hassle of having important papers blowing out. In addition, this option includes a large, fixed rear glass roof panel. Edge buyers with small children may wish to choose the rear-seat DVD entertainment system: The Vista Roof and DVD system can’t be had simultaneously. The DVD system features an eight-inch LCD display and two sets of wireless headphone so parents don’t have to listen to “Shrek The Third,” “Ratatouille” or “Alvin and the Chipmunks” 817 times in a row.
The Edge’s ride is more taut than similarly priced sedans, but still smoother than most SUVs. The tires transmitted more road noise than expected. Also the forward-mounted front A-pillar can hide traffic when the driver is trying to make a left turn.
