An open storage bin sits above the revised instrument panel, while a charger outlet waits within the reworked center console. Removable cupholders in the console have modular inserts and a pullout bin for electronic gadgets (including an MP3 player, which can be plugged into the Dakota's audio systems) or a cell phone. Chrysler's UConnect hands-free operation is available, too.
Heated bench seats may be installed, along with Chrysler's "MyGIG" Multimedia Infotainment System. Rough-and-ready TRX editions get new fender flares, bodyside moldings, an accent grille, tow hooks, and black headlight bezels. Sport models are upgraded with unique two-tone fabric seats and chrome textures. Red/black-upholstered seats in the Sport model are particularly striking, flaunting a sporty flair.
Extended Cab models feature class-exclusive "Full Swing" rear access doors that open nearly 170 degrees for easy entry. The dual-position tailgate can be secured in mid-position, to support extra-wide or long cargo. Dodge claims that the standard cargo bed in Extended Cab models is the largest and longest in its class: 6 feet 6 inches.
Power and Performance
Firm seats offer excellent back and thigh support; plus substantial bolstering, though seatbacks are a little hard. The driver faces a fully calibrated center speedometer; with a comparably calibrated tachometer at its right. Though helpful, the available navigation system's screen is small and squat.
Dodge's V-6 engine actually delivers abundant energy at takeoff time, and more than enough to pass or merge effectively. Downshifts are reasonably prompt on part throttle, but a full-throttle demand can produce substantial delay, and then a leaping sensation when it does connect.
