Performance
Using the Environmental Protection Agency's new 2008 measurement system, the LaCrosse Super earns a gas-mileage estimate of 16 mpg in city driving and 24 mpg on the highway. Like regular LaCrosse models, the Super uses GM's four-speed Hydra-Matic transmission. Premium fuel is recommended for the Super, but not required.
Extra horsepower is only part of the performance story. The LaCrosse Super also benefits from an enhanced chassis, bigger brake rotors front and rear, and a revised axle ratio to boost acceleration. Buick also says it's set up to minimize "torque steer" (the tendency of a front-drive vehicle with a powerful engine to veer to the side when accelerating hard).
Painted aluminum 18-inch wheels are standard (chrome finish optional), in contrast to the basic LaCrosse's 16- or 17-inch rubber. Magnasteer II variable steering assistance is meant to operate with less effort at low speeds. Buick claims that the StabiliTrak electronic stability-control system is tuned to permit somewhat aggressive driving "without unwanted intervention."
Engineers even strove hard for a sporting, yet suitably subtle, exhaust sound. Traction control may be disabled if desired, for peak acceleration from a standstill. Mimicking notable Buicks of the past, the LaCrosse Super flaunts a row of four "portholes" on each front fender, just ahead of the door. Like other LaCrosse models, the Super gets a new hood and "waterfall" grille for 2008, inspired by the Buick Velite concept convertible. Standard parking-assist sensors are integrated into a new rear fascia, which wraps around 3.5-inch dual exhaust tips. A rear spoiler is standard.
Interior
Moving inside, front seats incorporate greater seatback bolstering for improved lateral support. All seats have woven-embossed "Dreamweave" leather inserts. Chestnut woodgraining accents the interior. Supers also get exclusive instrument-cluster graphics.

How big was the overhaul? Could be poorly installed rings. Did the guy hone the bore?
Did he replace the valve guides?
