Safety and Handling

BMW says its advanced rear differential helps the X6 turn better in emergency situations, much as a taller right-rear tire helps an oval track car go faster through the corners. However, I didn’t find it of benefit when the front tires lost grip. Another optional technology, this one called “active steering,” also didn’t produce obvious benefit for me. This feature adds steering angle when the fronts start to lose grip. However, when the tires are already at their limit, additional steering doesn’t help and may reduce grip. Perhaps these technologies are designed for folks who haven’t raced cars for decades. The optional sports package, which includes 20-inch wheels shod with sticky summer tires, will reduce the difference between the BMW X6 and sports cars.

The X6 xDrive35 was easier to drive, if not faster, around the racetracks. One reason: It weighs almost 500 less. Both versions come with the same six-speed automatic transmission that has a very low first gear for maximum acceleration and overdrive fifth and sixth gears for top fuel mileage. Even though all X6s are built in South Carolina, all diesel-engined versions are currently exported out of the U.S. However, diesel versions, along with a hybrid edition of the X6, should be released here in the next few years.

On the highway at reasonable speeds, the 2008 BMW xDrive50i and xDrive 35 are dreams to drive. Steering is precise and predictable. There’s more than ample head- and legroom for four (but only four) large adults. Behind the second row is enough room for four golf bags or enough luggage for a two-week vacation. If you have only one or two friends, the rear seats can be folded forward—together or separately—to increase carrying capacity.

Interior and Pricing

Interior styling is more aggressive than is traditional for BMW, but the mix of forms works well. However, the BMW corporate controls—cruise control, high beams, wipers—are non-intuitive and difficult to use. And I need a co-driver to operate the iDrive multi-function controller. An appealing option is the automatic tailgate that stops at varying positions to avoid low garage roofs or other obstacles.

The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price for the 2008 BMW X6 xDrive35i is about $53,500. With options that can easily exceed $60,000. The V8-powered 2008 BMX6 xDrive50i starts at about $64,000 and, fully optioned, can top out beyond $70,000. The 2008 BMW X6 xDrive55i and X6 xDrive35i are super-fast, super-roomy, technologically advanced vehicles. It doesn’t matter whether you call them powerful crossover utility vehicles, tall and fast station wagons, shooting brakes, or something else entirely. (www.bmwusa.com)
