Saab is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2007. The Swedish automaker has long been known as the "aircraft" company. That's because its automobiles were heavily influenced by the firm's early years as a manufacturer of airplanes. Aerodynamics, for instance, was emphasized long before it began to affect designs of most other motor vehicles.
Styling
Historically, Saabs "had a unique personality," said general manager Jay Spenchian, "a unique feel. That's where we're going to take the brand" in the years ahead. "Saab is going to be here for the long haul," following the theme: "Born from Jets."
Dating back to the 1950s and early 1960s, when Saabs had two-stroke engines and unconventional profiles, the Swedish-made cars were known for quirkiness. These days, apart from an ignition key that remains in its traditional position—close to floor level rather than on the dashboard—quirks are few and unintrusive. Instead, Saabs come across as sophisticated, solidly built, civilized road machines with a European flair.
Three 9-3 body styles are offered: sport sedan, SportCombi wagon, and convertible, each in base 2.0T or upscale Aero trim. A restyled interior for 2007 contains a new instrument panel with a bigger gauge cluster. Automatic climate control and "infotainment" systems are new. GM's OnStar Safety and Security system is newly available, along with a navigation system and either 16- or 17-inch wheels. XM Satellite Radio is now standard on Aero models and optional for the 2.0T. A Bose stereo system is available in sport sedans.
Interior
Saab's 60th-anniversary editions come in all three body styles. Based on the "entry-level" 210-hp 2.0T, the anniversary models contain foglamps, a rear aero spoiler, unique 17-inch alloy wheels, and are offered in exclusive Ice Blue body color. "Anniversary" interiors are said to be reminiscent of the old Saab 900. Black leather sport seats have gray inserts and contrasting stitching, plus "Saab" embossed into front leather.
