Performance
Head-curtain side-impact airbags are available, but only as an option. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates fuel economy for either model at 25-mpg city and 34-mpg highway with manual shift, dipping to 24/32 mpg with the automatic transmission.
Satisfying if snug, the G5 radiates a youthful persona and style. As expected, the G5 is quite Cobalt-like in performance and behavior. More than expected, the base G5 with an automatic transmission turns out to be friendly and surprisingly frisky. Response to the gas pedal with the 148-hp engine is significantly more enthusiastic than many cars in its class. That's true whether accelerating from zero, 30 mph, or 50 mph. Pontiac's automatic transmission is very well-behaved. Shifts are crisp but smooth. Downshifts are prompt and especially easygoing.
Although the ride is pleasant on smooth highways, some stiffness of even the base FE1 suspension is noticeable on bumpier surfaces. Of course, that contributes to the car's semi-sporty nature—even in base trim.
Steering feels slightly heavy (with electric assist), but the G5 maneuvers neatly. Though not quite flat in curves, G5 hangs relatively tight—better than some rivals, at least, without squealing through corners. Like Chevrolet's Cobalt, the G5 emits a foghorn-like sound when accelerating; but that sounds seems a trifle more appropriate in a Pontiac than a Chevrolet. No particular road noise is noticeable.
Interior
White-faced gauges, standard on both models, are large and easy enough to read, but they do have slightly cheap look. Only a gas gauge is included on the base G5, between the tachometer and speedometer. Inside the cozy cockpit, the windshield seems far away, but the G5's driving position is satisfactory and the operator has enough elbow and leg space. Thick windshield pillars may impair visibility at times. Small rear quarter panes don't help over-the-shoulder views, but long front door glass and a wide back window help atone for that deficiency.
