2007 Hummer H3
Everything's relative

One size does not fit all. This revelation comes to mind as we drive the Hummer H3, and think of other Hummers we've also tested. Other, larger Hummers, let's add, and that's just the point. No one's ever questioned the gutsy, go anywhere attitude that pours from the pores of the original, civilian Hummers; but, in the cold light of real world driving, the H1 suffers mightily. Its enormous cost and excessive mass made it more caricature than car; a superhero SUV, remote from all but the few who don't have to worry about driving between the lines or spending within their means.
Styling
Next came the H2. This is more enticing because it's more practical, at least compared to the H1. The latter can go almost anywhere, but fit almost nowhere. The former has much of the H1's hardcore, off-road heartiness, but it can also be driven on streets without imminent danger to those walking on sidewalks. It's still oversized, but less heroically so, and people (mostly guys) hear the siren song. Even those who don't own one feel the pull of this ultimate sandbox toy.
One more trip into the dryer produced the H3, an SUV that mirrors the H2's form, in 3/4-scale. Compared to H2, the H3 is 16.9 inches shorter, 6.5 inches narrower and 1,700 lbs. lighter. With the footprint of a midsize car, here finally is a Hummer that can be discussed in polite company, yet still gets the 10w-40 pumping in your bloodstream. The appeal has much to do with the H2's looks. From the turret top with sawed-off glass, to the chiseled, square-shoulder profile, little brother is a ringer for big brother.
Interior
Speaking of style, a new model debuts in late summer 2006 as the first of the 2007 Hummer lineup. Based on the H3 Street concept that appeared at SEMA last November, the H3x caters to buyers looking to customize and accessorize. Hummer starts with an H3 model with the luxury package and adds some bling-basics: chrome tube steps, fuel door and the chrome appearance package. Also included are a body color grille, a brush guard, spare tire cover and model specific rims and tires. Buyers can choose any of Hummer's eight colors on the outside and three leather selections for the inside, which also features embroidered headrests.
While the H3's footprint is car-like, the shoe itself is still a boot, with a clunky, mud-loving Vibram sole. For those who would actually take it where it was designed to go, the H3 is a happy (and capable) off-road rambler. Four skid plates below protect vital parts from rocky roads. Short overhangs front and rear leave little to get hung up on, and the angles of approach/breakover/departure (40/25/37 degrees, respectively) mark the littlest Hummer as a serious trail basher. With 9.1 inches of ground clearance below, the H3 will climb rocks up to 16 inches high and ford water 16 inches deep (at 20 mph). The electronically controlled 4x4 system is bolstered by traction control, an optional, rear locking differential, and stability control. The sum of the parts is as surefooted as anything in its class.
