2007 Honda Fit
Unpretentiously able

Rear passenger space is not as sizable as in Nissan's Versa, though head- and legroom rank as quite good for a subcompact. Fit drivers can expect easy visibility all around. Deep-set, hooded gauges are not the easiest to read at a glance. Audio controls are somewhat oddly laid out.
Honda promises a "sporty driving demeanor" for the Fit, claiming that it's "designed to take the subcompact market into new territory." After driving the current Civic, which ranks as one of the most enticing compact sedans on the market, you might indeed expect comparable appeal from the new Fit. Measured against the latest competitors, though, that expectation isn't quite fulfilled.
Performance
Honda's 1.5-liter VTEC four-cylinder engine develops 109 horsepower at a relatively swift 5,800 rpm, and 105 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm. A five-speed manual gearbox is standard, or an optional five-speed automatic transmission may be installed. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates fuel economy at 33 mpg for city driving and 38 mpg on the highway with manual shift, dropping to 31/38 mpg with an automatic transmission.
Like the larger Civic sedan, the Fit is impressively capable and easy to drive; yet, from behind the wheel (even in Sport form), it lacks truly compelling character or personality. Yes, the Fit does its job well; it simply fails to cry out with enthusiasm, "Drive me home now." Considering that it's not a particularly inexpensive car, some prospects might expect just a little more zest for their money—though such bonuses as standard ABS give Honda a potent edge among the practical-minded.
Exceptionally quiet, apart from typical small-car straining sounds when accelerating, the Fit delivers satisfactory performance. Crisp, quiet gear changes with the automatic transmission are hardly noticed, and highly refined. Pleasant ride quality adds to the Fit's appeal, but handling is nothing special.
