2007 Crossover Guide
Navigating through the panoply of the new breed of SUVs

Since the Toyota RAV4 popularized the car-based SUV concept in the mid-1990s, crossover vehicles have grown exponentially, both in total sales and models. Unlike many fads, the spiking crossover popularity has its roots in common sense. Americans have voted with their wallets for years, with a large percentage wanting a commanding view of the road, all-weather traction, light-duty tow capability, flexible interior space, and tough-looking styling. Recent interest has been furthered by escalated fuel prices encouraging consumers to right-size their daily drivers. While some manufacturers had timidly approached this emerging market segment in the past, nearly all automakers are shifting their focus on crossovers in 2007 and beyond. Translation: this trend is still gaining momentum.
For years, traditional SUVs were the only option for drivers seeking family-friendly utility vehicles and as a consequence models like the Ford Explorer had enjoyed rock-star popularity. As more rational thinking prevailed, consumers realized that they could find most of the functionality they seek in lighter, more-affordable machines with better ride and fuel economy. What's not to love?
What is expected over the coming few years is a continued proliferation of fresh crossover models that fit in to established niches, as well as the carving out new crossovers. As we chart the redesigns, all-new vehicles and updates, the 2007 model year promises more crossover choices than ever before.
Acura MDX
While some manufacturers are just entering the luxury arena, Acura introduces its second-generation MDX for 2007. Continuing with a one-engine strategy, the redesigned MDX packs a 300-hp, 3.7-liter V6 with a five-speed automatic transmission. Starting at $40k, this seven-passenger crossover packs a rich roster of standard safety equipment and amenities. Options take the MDX even further, with such notables as active suspension, heated second-row seats, power liftgate, rear-view camera, and 410-watt, 10-speaker stereo system.
Acura RDX
This year Acura also expands its crossover reach into the near-lux segment, best defined by the BMW X3, with the all-new RDX. Based on the redesigned Honda CR-V platform, the RDX brings premium amenities to the small SUV segment. It features the automaker's first turbocharged automotive engine, a 240-hp 2.3-liter four-cylinder. The strong mid-range power is delivered via Acura's patented Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. Comfortable, feature rich, and entertaining to drive, the RDX furthers the crossover art.
Audi Q7
Latecomer to the SUV party, Audi enters with the three-row Q7, spun on the jointly developed platform that underpins the Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. Base models start at $40k with a 280-hp 3.6-liter V6 and Quattro all-wheel drive. The price jumps to $50k with a 340-hp, 4.2-liter V8, though the standard equipment level makes a significant leap, as well. Feeling like the taller, more substantial sibling to the former allroad wagon, the Q7 brings a decidedly German approach to the crossover market—taut suspension, sophisticated lines, and impressive technology.
BMW X3
A pioneer in the small luxury SUV segment, the 3 Series-derived X3 is best known for its sporty handling and related ride-quality concession. Significantly freshened for '07, the X3 exhibits more refined manners while retaining its entertaining personality. The redesigned interior is more sophisticated, highlighted by a better-dressed dashboard. The real magic is underhood, with a new 260-hp 3.0-liter inline six engine.
BMW X5
A second-generation X5 introduced for 2007 sees this line increase in size to accommodate a third seating row, further separating it from the X3. It too features the new 3.0-liter inline-six engine, with a 350-hp 4.8-liter V-8 also available. The X5 combines a litany of premium 7 Series-grade luxo features with core SUV elements, making it a driver's choice among crossovers.
Cadillac SRX
Complimenting its truck-based Escalade lineup is the Cadillac SRX, based on the Sigma platform used for the CTS sedan. Essentially a tall wagon, the SRX combines sedan road manners and a flexible interior. Smooth powertrains add to the luxury feel, with the "high feature" 3.6-liter V-6 and Northstar 4.6-liter V-8. A six-speed automatic transmission is new for '07 with the V-8. The interior has been redesigned, as well. Other new-and-notables include a Bose 5.1 digital surround audio system, a Theater package that bundles the Bose stereo, navigation system and rear-view camera, and Sport package with 20-inch wheels.
Chevrolet Equinox
Known for its rock-solid pickup trucks, Chevrolet has softened its image with Equinox crossover developed off the first-gen Saturn Vue platform. A roomy, five-passenger vehicle, the Equinox offers more size and power than most competitors in its price range. A midlife freshening for 2007 sees most updates made inside, with a revised instrument cluster and center-stack controls, new available audio systems, and a new driver information center. Four-wheel disc brakes and tire pressure monitoring system are standard, as are typical power amenities, air conditioning, keyless entry, and six-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo.
Dodge Caliber
For too many years, Dodge offered just the truck-based Durango SUV, lacking both a full-size and compact SUV. Now, Dodge finally has not one but two small crossover entries, the Caliber and Nitro. The five-door Caliber replaces the Neon sedan with a wagon-like vehicle that has an elevated ride-height and tough-looking exterior. The unibodied Caliber shares the core platform and drivetrains with the Jeep Compass and Patriot. The Caliber offerings range from mild to quite wild as three four-cylinder engines span from 148-hp to a muscle-car-grade 300-hp in the high-performance SRT4.
Dodge Nitro
Created from Jeep Liberty mechanicals, the Nitro aims to split the difference between a rugged off-roader and mild, all-weather crossover. Its key attraction is the masculine, boxy styling, though clever features like a sliding cargo floor and available MyGig multimedia system further add to the appeal. The mid-range R/T shines with a 255-hp V-6 and more comprehensive amenities on the roster. Standard features include air conditioning, AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system, electronic stability control, keyless entry and six-speed manual transmission. The Nitro is available in RWD, AWD, and full-time 4WD.
