BMW truly puts "sport" into its Sports Activity Vehicle, especially in 4.8i form. If any SUV's handling resembles that of a sports car, this is the one. Trouble is, though, that capability is accompanied by a markedly heavy overall feel. That might be fine on a racetrack, but it's less appealing during everyday drives. And the X5 isn't meant for hard-core off-roading, either. Exceptionally solid and well-built, the X5 is extraordinarily quiet for a vehicle of this caliber. Everything is isolated and well-muffled.
Interior
Just as BMW claims, this isn't a big vehicle. Unless the available third-row seat is folded down, there's little cargo space. Climbing into the rear won't appeal to less agile adults, either. Interior and exterior dimensions have grown slightly, but the X5 remains a midsize model. Measuring 191.1 inches long overall, it falls well short in size of such models as the Lexus GX 470 and Range Rover HSE.
Some people love it, but others brand BMW's iDrive control system an annoyance. Even simple tuning of the radio can become a tedious chore. Instruments are BMW-familiar, far easier to understand at a glance than anything the iDrive does.
Although the brawny V-8 issues plenty of power, because of that heavy feel, the X5 4.8i doesn't seem all that potent. In town, at least, expect a stiff ride. Even on a relatively smooth expressway, the ride often becomes somewhat lumpy.
As promised, the X5 is a serious sports machine. To benefit from its visceral appeal, though, you have to accept a few shortcomings in the areas of ride comfort and controls. With the V-8, an X5 stickers for $54,500 (plus $695 destination charge). Accepting a V-6 saves you $8,600. (www.bmwusa.com)
