A new high-capacity five-speed automatic transmission goes into the TL sedan, while the Type-S adds SportShift logic for faster shifts and more driver control. Shifts between first and second gear, and back again, are no longer automatically achieved but are up to the driver's discretion. Always an appealing road car, the new TL—especially in Type-S trim—turns into a masterful driving machine. Expect plenty of exuberant energy even with the Type-S's automatic transmission, marred only by an occasional awkward downshift at lower speeds.
Reaching beyond the re-tuned TL suspension, the Type-S promises improved stability and road-holding force, courtesy of tighter dampers and thicker stabilizer bars. Steering effort is greater than in a standard TL sedan, and Brembo front brakes are installed. Taut and utterly satisfying in overall feel, even on modestly imperfect or wavy surfaces, the Type-S delivers ride quality that few should fault. On smooth pavement it's quite comfortable, though you constantly sense the tautness, more so when rolling over railroad tracks.
Handling is the biggest bonus. Each Type-S grasps the pavement with tenacity, through one twisty narrow two-lane after another, never wavering in its ability to provide entertaining and enjoyable road experiences. This performance-package sedan follows steering-wheel inputs religiously, reacting quickly and positively under all conditions.
TL sedans are priced between $34,000 and $39,000 and target the "urban achiever." A navigation package is the sole option. A Rear View Camera and Real Time Traffic information are standard with the navigation system. HandsFreeLink now includes Cell Phonebook Transfer, which moves all data within a minute. (www.acura.com)
