Styling
Inside, the RDX cabin is packed with electronics and creature comforts to suit its segment. Sliding into the front seat, the driver is greeted by a cool display of backlit, LED gauges. The standard sound system packs 360 watts, pushed through seven speakers. A multi-format six-disc changer, XM satellite radio and an auxiliary jack for input from your iPod are also part of the standard sound array. Many, if not most, RDX buyers are expected to opt for the Technology Package. Though the up-charge is stiff ($3,500), the payback is substantial, including a serious, step-up sound system. A 10-speaker, 410-watt ELS surround sound setup, to be exact, designed by recording engineer legend Elliot Scheiner. As with previous Acura ELS systems, it is among the best rolling sound that can be found anywhere. Also included in the Tech Package are a navigation system with voice recognition and rear view camera, hands free wireless telephone link and satellite feed real-time traffic information for many metropolitan areas.
As to cabin logistics, the mammoth, covered center console can easily swallow a laptop or briefcase. Stowage spots for other, smaller items are sprinkled about inside, as are spot lighting fixtures. Acura mixes materials well for a look that combines textured and technical. Fit and finish are first rate. With some accommodation between first and second rows, RDX will seat six-footers in both. Rear seats easily split and fold flat. Cargo capacity ranges from 27.8-60.6 cubic feet of space. It's a good-sized hold; tall enough to hold bikes upright, usefully wide, with a low liftover height.
The RDX blend of savvy technology and upscale functionality should wear well with its target market. Prices start at $32,995, and Acura expects to sell in the neighborhood of 40,000 in the first year. At this point, the class of entry premium crossovers is indeed small. But, with the quality of its latest entry, Acura assures itself a front row seat, even as the numbers swell. (www.acura.com)
