A lot has changed in the SUV world since Acura introduced its seven-passenger luxury model for 2001. Crossover models like the MDX have been edging aside traditional sport-utility vehicles. As fuel prices escalate, all SUVs face hard realities.
In its redesigned 2007 form, the second-generation MDX has grown a bit and gained considerable power. Acura says its enlarged 3.7-liter engine is the most potent V-6 in any SUV.
Styling
While the current MDX targets "Family Mom," said chief engineer Frank Paluch, the 2007 model also seeks "Driver Dad." The first-generation MDX "wasn't an emotional purchase," whereas this version aspires to be part of an "Executive Family Mission." MDX buyers might be tempted by the performance of a BMW X5, the utility of a Volvo XC90, and the luxury of a Lexus RX. Acura claims that the 2007 MDX—tested at the Nurburgring racecourse—combines all three attributes.
Designed in the U.S., the latest MDX was inspired by the bold, clean lines of the Wallypower 118 luxury yacht, said principal exterior designer Ricky Hsu. Built on an all-new platform, it's "not an Odyssey in disguise," added chief engineer Jim Fusco. Length has increased by 2.25 inches, to 190.7. At 78.5 inches (up 2.5), the MDX is considerably wider than major competitors. Reduced gaps around tires accentuate the sportier persona.
This MDX is "small-car friendly," Fusco explained, with "no over-ride" in case it bumps another vehicle. Three-row side curtain airbags are standard. Trailer Stability Assist joins vehicle Stability Assist and traction control. The MDX boasts the biggest brakes ever installed on an Acura. Even though most owners seldom leave the pavement, each MDX can ford 20-inch deep water. The 2007 model can tow 5,000 pounds, versus only 2,000 for its predecessor.
