2006 Volvo S60 R
Swedish automaker's lustiest sedan delivers exuberant yet refined performance, along with traditional safety

For decades, safety has been the byword at Volvo. More recently, though, the Swedish automaker has inserted a selection of performance-focused models into its lineup. Hottest of the lot is the S60 R high-performance sport sedan, one of four versions of the midsize S60 series.
Under the hood sits Volvo's most powerful five-cylinder engine. Working with continuously variable valve timing for both the intake and exhaust camshafts, the 2.5-liter inline engine generates 300 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, available at as low as 1,950 rpm. Twin intercoolers ease the load of the engine's turbocharger.
Styling
New standard Heldex all-wheel drive for 2006, with "Instant Traction," is intended to improve road grip. The AWD system sends up to 50 percent more torque to the back wheels when needed, including the initial moments of takeoff. A new six-speed Geartronic transmission option replaces the former five-speed unit. Acceleration to 60 mph has been quickened from 7.2 seconds with last year's transmission to 6.6 seconds for 2006. Volvo also offers a six-speed close-ratio manual gearbox, with a short-throw shift lever.
Volvo's Four C (Continuously Control Chassis Concept) active chassis system compensates for road variances. Drivers can select Comfort or Sport mode, or an Advanced setting, using dashboard pushbuttons. Dynamic Stability and Traction Control is a standard feature. Side-curtain airbags and front-seat side-impact airbags also are included, along with antilock braking.
Exceptionally easy to drive, the S60 R is fully docile and manageable around town and during ordinary highway use. Overall, this is a refined and gentlemanly automobile, yet one that conceals a burly powertrain and a suspension that delivers confident, controlled motoring.
