With gasoline prices rising rapidly and fuel shortages possible, logic would suggest that economy cars might rule the 2006 model lineup. Instead, though, the new and redesigned models run the full gamut, ranging from a gargantuan Dodge pickup down to redesigned minicars from South Korean automakers.
More cars this year will come standard with six airbags: front, seat-mounted side-impact, and side-curtain. More commonplace in 2006 will be five- and six-speed automatic transmissions. Otherwise, trends are elusive.
Early Launches
As usual, some 2006 models went on sale early. BMW launched its redesigned 3-Series in late spring of 2005. Audi did likewise with its sporty new A3 hatchback. Dodge issued the first Charger sedans, including a Hemi-powered R/T, this summer. Unlike Chargers of the distant past, all of the 2006 models have four doors.
While Lexus launched reworked sport-luxury GS models back in the spring of 2005, Infiniti shipped out redesigned M35/M45 sedans to dealerships. Mercedes-Benz released sleek new CLS-Class sedans and Honda, granting an early introduction, released its big Ridgeline pickup with innovative cargo-box storage and a unique look.
Subaru launched its new B9 Tribeca early. Bigger than its mates, the new "flagship" can seat up to seven occupants. Mitsubishi did likewise with its Eclipse coupe, available with a new 3.8-liter V-6. Hyundai's enlarged Sonata sedan arrived last spring, more spacious than before.
