The Mercedes of SUVs

The new model is also slightly larger: six inches longer, about three inches wider and sits a bit lower, with a notably longer wheelbase for added interior room. Our tester, in its rich-looking silver paint, looked powerful, modern and exuded good taste.
And while appearances are important, the new M-Class offers impressive depth in the driving department as well. At the heart of the matter is the all-new 3.5-liter V-6 we first enjoyed in the SLK350 sports car. The fact that it pumps out 268 horsepower is impressive, but even more so is the fact that it delivers its maximum torque at a low 2,400 rpm. Off-the line acceleration is very strong, as well as providing an addicting surge as the engine gathers steam.
Power
Making more out of an already very good thing is the standard 7-speed automatic—the first ever in an SUV—that is accessed by a unique column-mounted lever. Employing electronic controls, you just tap the lever down from Park (maybe it moves an inch) and it selects Drive. For Reverse, you just nudge the lever upward. Park is accessed by tapping the end of the lever. With seven speeds, you always seem to find yourself in the perfect gear, whether it's for rapid merging, quick overtaking or just quiet, relaxed, fuel-efficient cruising. For those who want manual-style control, there are little rocker switches on the back of the steering wheel spokes. We'd be pleased to find this kind of control in a sport sedan or coupe, but to find them in an SUV brings a new level of driving enjoyment to this class of vehicle.
If the great new engine and transmission don't make you want to go for a long drive, the chassis certainly will. Departing from the previous model's extremely rugged but stiff-riding truck chassis is an all-new unibody car-style chassis with a fully independent suspension. The result is luxury sport-sedan smoothness and quietness along with responsive, precise handling. Standard ESP (Electronic Stability Control), originated by Mercedes-Benz, and a seamless full-time all-wheel-drive system also add layers of confidence no matter where you go.
Should those destinations include the rough stuff, the ML350 is extremely capable, with such advanced technologies as a one-button off-road program that recalibrates the traction control system, ABS, and an engine management system and transmission to enhance control for typical off-road conditions. You'll also find downhill speed regulation that lets the ML maintain a preset crawl speed in rough terrain, and hill-start assist to help prevent unwanted rollback when taking off from a stop on uphill or downhill grades.
