Performance
The GS 430 4.3-liter DOHC 32-valve VVT-i (Continuously Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) V-8 generates 300 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque with excellent low- and mid-range power. Coupled to the new 6-speed automatic, it's capable of zero-to-60 bursts in the mid-five-second range along with respectable economy.
The new V-6 uses direct fuel injection for much finer mixture control, which improves both power and economy. Dual variable valve timing acts on both intake and exhaust valves to provide a wide, flat torque curve for crisp, quick throttle response at virtually any engine speed. Reduced internal friction contributes to the 300's impressive economy ratings of 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.
The GS suspension is completely new, and the 430's Adaptive Variable Suspension automatically selects optimum damping and has a selectable sport mode for tighter response. The 430 boasts Lexus' Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM), an all-new all-encompassing system that integrates and manages: 1) a new Electronically Controlled Brake (ECB) system, 2) Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS), 3) Electric Power Steering (EPS), 4) Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), 5) ABS, 6) Brake Assist (BA), 7) Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and 8) engine torque via the electronically controlled throttle. Monitoring a variety of sensors, it's designed to anticipate the onset of a skid then help correct it, transparently to the driver, with a combination of braking, throttle and steering.
While this ultra-sophisticated system works wondrously well to keep drivers out of trouble, it can be intrusive and annoying to those with exceptional skill and experience who want to explore the limits of control because it cannot be turned off. Try pushing the car hard, and it takes control and won't let go until you back off. On the other hand, most drivers will probably appreciate this kind of on-road safety and stability since it puts performance driving within reach.
Safety & Amenities
The GS features standard dual-zone climate control that filters and deodorizes incoming air, Bluetooth wireless telephone capability, tire pressure monitoring and an adaptive front lighting system that helps illuminate curves as you steer into them. New for 2006, available with the optional navigation system, is an outstanding driver assist: a rear back-up camera that projects an image of what's behind the car onto the nav screen when the transmission is in reverse. Also available is Intuitive Park Assist, which uses ultrasonic sensors to detect nearby objects and a steering input sensor to better judge changes in distance to them. Newly optional are ventilated front seats and a power rear sunshade.
