While most Americans view minivans as uncool rides, the U.S. minivan market remains strong because a lot of folks need more room and utility than car-based crossovers can provide, and want more car-like character and economy than truck-based SUVs offer. As a result, most multi-line automakers work hard to compete—and here comes Kia with a much-improved new entry.
Overview
When Korean manufacturer Kia launched its first-generation Sedona in mid-2001, it was lauded mostly for its impressive list of standard stuff at a modest price. This all-new 2006 version continues that tradition while offering more size, power and standard and available features, along with one of the U.S. market's best new-vehicle warranties (five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper, 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain, five-year roadside assistance).
Like the previous model, the 2006 Sedona is available in two trim levels, LX and EX, both powered by an all-new 3.8-liter DOHC 24-valve V-6 engine that pumps out a class-leading 244 horsepower. This all-aluminum V-6, with multi-port electronic fuel injection and dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT), drives through an electronically controlled five-speed automatic with overdrive and manu-matic shifting.
The four-wheel independent suspension is MacPherson struts with coil springs and a stabilizer bar in front, and multi-link with coil springs and stabilizer bar in back. Steering is power rack-and-pinion, brakes are power four-wheel discs, and standard tires are P225/70R16 all-season radials (EX models get 235/60R17 Michelins). Nothing unusual or special here, but it all works well on the road.
Styling
While most minivans look pretty much alike, Kia says it gave its new Sedona a Euro look with "clean, crisp lines, a gradually rearward sloping roof and wheels pushed outboard to the corners for a more muscular appearance." Okay. We'll agree it's reasonably attractive, with its body-color grille and bumpers and clear-lens projector halogen headlamps. The EX adds chrome grille bars, 17-inch double-spoke alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, rear chrome molding and solar glass windshield and front side windows.
