In the backseat, the outer positions are quite roomy and almost comfortable, except for slightly hard cushioning. Unlike some sedans, the center rear spot is passable. Entry/exit presents no obstacles, into both the front and rear compartments. Gauges are ordinary but easy enough to read. Controls are logically positioned and easy to reach comfortably.
Power
All-disc antilock braking includes electronic brake-force distribution. Electronic Stability Control with traction control is standard, along with active front head restraints. The standard complement of six airbags includes front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and roof-mounted side-curtain units. Standard equipment consists of power windows, locks and mirrors, plus remote keyless entry with an alarm, a leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, six-speaker stereo with CD/MP3 player, cruise control, and air conditioning with a cabin air filter. Automatic-transmission models have a leather-wrapped gearshift knob. A 60/40 split-folding rear seatback is also standard with all trims.
Moving up to the GLS gets you a four-speed automatic transmission, 16-inch alloy wheels, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, automatic light control and driver's adjustable lumbar support. Fog lamps and floor mats also are included with the GLS sedan. Leather seating surfaces and heated front seats are included with the LX sedan, along with a power driver's seat, automatic temperature control, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Additional LX extras include a telescoping steering wheel, sliding center armrest, HomeLink transceiver, a compass, and an electronic auto-dimming inside rearview mirror.
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates fuel economy at 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway with a manual shift four-cylinder engine. Automatic knocks off one mpg. With V-6 power and its companion six-speed automatic transmission, estimated gas mileage drops to 20/30 mpg. Sticker prices start at $18,495 (including destination charge) for the GL sedan with manual shift. An automatic transmission raises the outlay to $19,395. With a four-cylinder engine and automatic, the midlevel GLS sedan stickers for $19,995, while the V-6 version runs $1,500 higher. Only a V-6 and automatic are offered in the $23,495 LX sedan.
