For 2006, a smooth-shifting electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission is standard, while selecting the Trailer Towing Package adds a transmission oil cooler.
Welcoming Interior
If you've never driven a Wagon, stepping inside the E-150 for the first time is a wondrous experience. The big interior is hardly austere: the XLT model grade features color-keyed carpeting throughout the cabin, a cloth headliner, and even standard floor mats. New for '06 is a redesigned slim-line engine cover console that adds even more interior room.
In front are comfortable "captain's chairs" with cloth upholstery, and the standard second- and third-row bench seats accommodate three passengers each. Did we mention the interior is huge? It's big enough that Ford provides high-capacity air-conditioning and heating systems so front and rear passengers can control their own air space.
Practical Options
While SUVs and pickups raced to the frontlines in America's love affair with trucks, Wagons stayed loyal to their original mission of providing maximum utility. Thus, with the E-150 XLT, there aren't too many options to choose from. Among them are a premium audio system with six speakers and a CD changer, a six-way power adjustable driver's seat, and privacy glass. And luxury shoppers should be aware that there is a more elegantly appointed trim level called a Chateau available for $2,070 above the E-150 XLT's $28,150 sticker. Either way you go, the proof of the Wagon concept is in the driving. So gas up the E-150, phone a half-a-dozen friends, invite them to the game-and then go pick them all up.
* Passenger and load capacity limited by weight and weight distribution.
