Halfway through first gear, the 180-hp 1.8-liter turbocharged four comes alive, thrusting the car forward like a tropical storm surge.
Inside are more of the "Drivers Wanted" cues you'd expect from Volkswagen (at least, if you were watching the commercials). Particularly at night, the red/blue diode instrument lighting is particularly striking, although it does take some getting used to. And the GLI includes a neat trip computer that calculates such information as average trip speed, average fuel economy and miles to empty. The computer is great for commuting—you can always see how well your drive is going by noting the average-speed readout.
Volkswagen offers a couple of options that drivers will like as well. One is the Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP), a vehicle-stability controls system that can help drivers maintain control of the car in dicey situations by automatically reducing engine power and applying individual brakes. This inexpensive addition dovetails nicely with the five-speed automatic, which features the fashionable Tiptronic controls that allow the automatic to be shifted manually. Such systems may seem like an affront to those who love pure manual shifting, but they do offer a nice compromise between an automatic and a manual.
Although the Jetta has served in its current guise for several years now, it still offers a ton of fun and individuality for a pretty attractive price. The 2005 edition will see a short model year, with a mid-year replacement expected in spring. Particularly in the sporty GLI version, there's no denying its European roots and driving feel.
