This high-performing four-cylinder engine is mated to a responsive, close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission. A helical limited-slip differential is standard and really puts the power down from the front-wheel-drive transmission. This mechanical differential is torque sensitive and provides instantaneous locking for increased traction and performance. There is very little torque-steer shake when you mash your foot down on the metal. The SE-R Spec V races to 60 mph from 0 in just seven seconds.
The Sentra SE-R Spec V comes with a sport-tuned, fully independent suspension. Up front are MacPherson struts, tuned gas-charged shocks, high-rate coil springs and a stabilizer bar. A strut tower brace enhances stiffness and suspension feel. The unique rear suspension includes a multi-link beam setup with tuned gas-charged shocks, high-rate coil springs, and stabilizer bar. While the suspension is taut, it never feels harsh going over poorly paved road surfaces. Power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering gives excellent feedback from the road, with precise and quick response to your inputs.
Quickly slowing the SE-R Spec V down from speed is a high-performance brake package that includes gold-painted Brembo four-piston front calipers clamping 12-inch Brembo vented discs, and 10.9-inch rear solid discs clamped with a single-piston caliper. A four-wheel, four-channel, four-sensor ABS system insures that you remain in control of the car's direction during hard braking.
The 2005 Sentra SE-R Spec V's standard safety features include driver- and front-passenger supplemental airbags, front-seat side-impact supplemental airbags, three-point seatbelts in all seating positions, front seatbelts with adjustable upper anchors, pretensioners and load limiters, and a vehicle security system with immobilizer. Passive safety features include an energy-absorbing steering column; front and rear crumple zones and body side reinforcements. The car also features an emergency inside trunk-release, child safety rear door locks, and the LATCH (lower-anchors and tethers for children) system. A 300-watt Rockford Fosgate-powered audio system and power sunroof are optional.
For the racer in all of us, the 2005 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V puts it all together for a compact-sedan thrill-ride under 20 grand—a lot of merit for not a lot of money. (www.nissanusa.com)
