2005 Nissan Altima
Nissan's smart and sensible family sedan hits its midsize target

Four-cylinder engines of the past have been on the noisy side, but the current four-cylinder is almost as quiet as a V-6, exhibiting only a touch of unwelcome sound at times. Automatic transmissions are well behaved, downshifting promptly and gently. Acceleration might be more exuberant with a manual gearbox, but the automatic comes across as more refined and appropriate for a sedan of this caliber.
Altimas have all-disc brakes, with antilocking (ABS) standard only on top models and optional for others (except the base 2.5). Side-impact and side-curtain airbags also are an option, priced at $800. Four-cylinder Altimas ride 16-inch tires on steel or aluminum alloy wheels, while V-6 models get 215/55R17 rubber on alloy wheels.
Chrome accents add a distinctive touch to the SL models.
Five occupants have ample room inside the Altima, which includes 60/40 split fold-down rear seats. A power port inside the console can be used for a mobile phone, and the console armrest is height-adjustable. The instrument panel is designed to "fall away" from the occupants, providing greater legroom. Seats are comfortable and helpfully supportive. Cloth upholstery is standard, but leather seating is available in V-6 models. A cargo net is standard in the suitably sized trunk, which holds 15.6 cubic feet of luggage.
Nissan offers three four-cylinder models: base 2.5, mid-grade 2.5 S, and upscale 2.5 S with an SL Package. With a V-6 engine, you can choose the 3.5 SE, 3.5 SL, or the latest SE-R sedan with forged 18-inch wheels, an "aggressive" front fascia, rear spoiler, high-flow mufflers, and painted brake calipers. Inside are black leather-appointed sport seats and a center gauge cluster. Chrome accents add a distinctive touch to the SL models.
