The first-generation SLK was stigmatized as cute, darty, too softly sprung, and somewhat underpowered despite its supercharged four. Happily, that's a thing of the past. The only two numbers Mercedes-Benz want you to know about the new V-6-powered model are these: 5.4—that's the roadster's impressive 0-60 time. We'll attest that the all-new SLK 350 has the looks to go with its velvet punch. You can't miss this comely two-seater's parentage. It resembles a slightly shrunken variant on Mercedes-Benz's high-buck, high-powered McLaren SLR, right down to a pointy beak that thrusts forward the three-pointed star.

A newly redesigned folding aluminum hardtop (unique in the mid-range roadster class) works quickly and efficiently. Push the actuator, the top quickly splits into three folding parts; the front section actually flips over, and the entire, scissor-shaped assembly neatly stores in the trunk in just 22 seconds. You'll appreciate this tin-top's comfort in winter months when the very idea of a soft top is like covering an open window with a blanket. With the top up or down, Mercedes-Benz's close attention to solid structure ensures there's virtually no creaking or cowl shake. This is one solid little piece, and that chassis rigidity translates seamlessly into the car's handling and cornering prowess.
Mercedes-Benz calls this model a Coupe-Roadster because, with the folding top, it really is two cars in one. If you do insist on winter driving with the top down, M-B offers an optional AIRSCARF neck-level heating system. With the AIRSCARF on, a pleasantly unobtrusive stream of warm air circulates around your exposed head. It automatically compensates for air temperature and speed changes, keeping you remarkably comfortable on cold days. Even with the lid lowered, there's 6.5 cu. ft. of trunk space (and an acceptable 9.8 cu. ft. with the top up).
Inside, twin instrument binnacles give the driver all the needed information. Judicious use of aluminum trim and black leather on the SLK's sculpted dash evokes high-tech luxury and underscores the car's more serious intent. The buckets are deep and comfortably supportive. The shifter's neat, short-throw action works well with the responsive 268-bhp V-6 with variable valve timing. It cheerfully and quickly zips up the rev scale with a pleasantly audible sound you'll want to replay again and again. New rack-and-pinion steering (finally!) ensures sharp turn-in and great on-center feel. There's plenty of stopping power, too. The SLK's oversized 13-inch ventilated front disc brakes with four-piston calipers and 11.4-inch two-piston rear solid discs are very impressive, and befitting a true sports roadster.

Convertible safety? Predictably, Mercedes has you covered with two-stage front airbags, knee bags and head-thorax airbags located in the seatbacks that deploy in the event of a hard side impact. The SLK sports a full measure of Mercedes-Benz's impressive electronic array, including Electronic Stability Program (ESP), that can detect an imminent spin and help prevent it through selective braking (with just one braking wheel) to keep the car heading where you want it to go. Full range traction control is standard; so is Brake Assist, which senses a panic stop and applies full braking force faster than most drivers ever could.
