2005 Honda Odyssey
Honda hits the mark again with an expertly redesigned minivan

Honda had the confidence to let journalists drive Odysseys on a racecourse, where they behaved more like sport sedans than typical minivans. Their claim of Eurosedan-style handling is almost true, though steering isn't quite precise enough to completely warrant that classification. Body lean through curves is truly minimal. The quiet-running Odyssey is easy to drive, as expected, but it does require a bit of periodic correction on straight expressways.
The 2005 Odyssey's third-row seat offers One-Motion folding and is split 60/40.
When bumps and holes turn up, the ride can become less than gentle, but the suspension exhibits near-instant recovery and total control. Except for a thick B-pillar that impedes over-left-shoulder visibility, all-around views are fine. The gigantic, lit speedometer is exceptionally easy to read.
Details count when a vehicle is redesigned. Windows in the sliding side doors now open and close, and the gearshift lever has moved from the steering wheel to the console. Twin gloveboxes are installed. Most models include a "conversation mirror" to see into the back seats, coupled with a sunglass holder in a single overhead unit. A DVD entertainment with Surround Sound and a 9-inch screen is available—called the biggest in the industry.
Side-curtain airbags protect all three rows and incorporate nine rollover sensors. In addition, the Odyssey is the first minivan with Vehicle Stability Assistance on all models. From the first moments behind the wheel, the Odyssey simply feels like sheer excellence. Exceptionally tight and solid, this minivan is filled with thoughtful details. (www.honda.com)
