Standard powertrain is GM's 275-hp Vortec 4200 4.2-liter 24-valve, dual-overhead-cam inline six mated to a 4-speed electronically controlled automatic overdrive transmission with torque converter clutch. Generating a healthy 275 lb.-ft. of torque, it's the segment's most powerful base engine. If that's not enough, the optional 290-hp Vortec 5200 5.3L V-8 pumps out 325 lb.-ft. of torque for more acceleration and cargo-hauling capability—up to 6,500 lbs. with 2-wheel drive and 6,400 lbs. with 4-wheel drive.
Befitting its status as a GMC product, the inside is rich-looking and all the switches, dials and levers feel like quality pieces.
The cargo area has four tie-down rings that can be moved to any of 12 different locations, and there are four more fixed rings on the roof. The dual-function tailgate allows 2-tier loading for wide cargo, including the obligatory 4x8 sheets of plywood. And, like the regular stretched Envoy XL, XUV has a 25-gallon fuel tank for a theoretical 425-mile range with the 4.2-liter engine. Options for all 2005 Envoys include XM Satellite Radio and power adjustable pedals.
GM offers an extensive selection of accessories to expand the XUV's cargo-carrying versatility and personalize its appearance. For example, a lightweight, lockable, detachable, weather-resistant storage box with side handles for easy portability can be integrated into the cargo area sidewall to protect your stuff when the bed is left open. Rooftop utility bars can be added to attach bicycles, skis or a hard cargo carrier. On the cosmetic side, a body-color "bull bar" can add extra style to the front.
Befitting its status as a GMC product, the Envoy's interior is nicer and more expensive-looking than the TrailBlazer's, and all the switches, dials and levers feel like quality pieces. No fewer than three 12V accessory outlets inhabit the center stack. The outside mirrors are heated and have large turn-signal repeater lamps to alert others of your intentions. Way back there where the tailgate meets the weather, an unusually large and effective rear wiper keeps the retractable glass clean.
The dual-function tailgate allows 2-tier loading for wide cargo, including the obligatory 4x8 sheets of plywood.
For a bit over $38K, our test 4WD SLT model came equipped $1,040 in options including XM satellite radio, premium Bose speakers, power sunroof and upgraded 17-inch wheels for a bottom line price of $39,810 (destination charges included).
