Deeply recessed gauges are easy enough to see. Back-seat occupants have plenty of leg and headroom.
Solidity, performance and confident handling are the Magnum's prime qualities. Not only does the Magnum RT perform more energetically than its V-6 mates, but it feels more confident and sure-footed on the road. Push the gas pedal to the floor at a standstill, and the Magnum RT pushes you back into your seat. Passing/merging response is almost as eager, though not exactly ferocious. Better yet, the Hemi's five-speed transmission is about as smooth and positive as they get.
Not everyone needs the Hemi, however. A Magnum SXT with the 3.5-liter V-6 performs with satisfying vigor, though its modest engine sound is less lush and inspiring than the Hemi's. The four-speed automatic transmission functions almost as smoothly as the Hemi's five-speed. Even the 2.7-liter V-6 turns in credible performance, though it's a little noisier.
Fuel usage is sure to be more frugal with a V-6 engine, but engineers have incorporated a new Multi-Displacement System into the Hemi V-8, to ease its consumption. When the Magnum is cruising lightly, half the cylinders will shut down automatically.
With its ride-tuned suspension, the Magnum SXT is comfortable on the road and hangs onto the pavement quite well. Handling in the RT is a bit tighter, with little loss in ride comfort.
The Magnum RT contains Dodge's 340-horsepower Hemi V-8 engine, which unleashes 390 pound-feet of torque.
Deeply recessed gauges are easy enough to see, though the trip odometer is positioned low. Back-seat occupants have plenty of leg and headroom, though the center rider must straddle the driveshaft tunnel. Large mirrors help rearward visibility, but the squat quarter windows impair over-the-shoulder views. Lack of a strap or easy-to-reach handle makes lowering the liftgate a chore for shorter-stature drivers.
