The Double Cab comes in two trim levels: SR-5 and Limited, each available with Toyota's 4.7 liter DOHC, 32-valve i-Force V8 with a cast iron block and aluminum alloy heads. The engine produces 240 horsepower @ 4,800 rpm and 315 pound feet of torque @ 3,400 rpm.
Even though the cabin is remarkably plush for a 4x4, you still hear and feel the smooth rumble of the optional 4.7-liter, i-Force V8 engine.
Even though the cabin is remarkably plush for a 4x4, you still hear and feel the smooth rumble of the optional 4.7-liter, i-Force V8 engine that is found in all but the most basic Tundras (a 190hp V6 is available, but the gas savings are minimal by comparison).
The Tundra's i-Force engine features a dual-overhead-cam design with a cast-iron block and aluminum alloy heads. Those taking a closer look might realize that this engine is the same one used in the Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX 470 SUVs, which is a derivative of the all-aluminum, 4.0-liter V8 first seen in the Lexus LS 400.
In naturally aspirated form, the i-Force runs on regular-grade 87-octane gasoline, but the test vehicle we drove had something extra: a Roots-type blower from TRD (Toyota Racing Development). To prevent detonation, most supercharged engines must run on premium-grade fuel, but the extra expense is worth the 50-percent increase in horsepower and torque over the stock 4.7-liter engine.
With a boost level of up to seven pounds, TRD claims an output as high as 353 hp and 359 pound-feet of torque. Fully one-third of that extra torque comes on at 2800 rpm. This blower also fits on later models of the Sequoia, Land Cruiser/LX 470 and 4Runner. Price of the unit is less than $5000, and it takes about a day to install.
