2004 Suzuki XL-7
Good things in a smallish package
In the past, Suzuki was known for some unconventional and undersized vehicles. They had their place in the automotive landscape, but it wasn't in the forefront.
That's all changing, however. Even though the Suzuki XL-7 is slightly smaller than most midsize SUVs, this flagship model is the largest in the company's line of sport utes and, more important, represents Suzuki's push into the crowded and swift mainstream. The company has ambitious goals, and this SUV clearly demonstrates that these should be taken seriously.
Suzuki XL-7 is slightly smaller than most midsize SUVs, yet it boastfully competes against the crowded and swift mainstream.
In emphasizing quality more than quantity, the top-shelf XL-7 4WD EX III model comes outfitted with just about every imaginable amenity, all neatly stuffed into a capable chassis and engine package. So even though it takes up less space in your garage than most SUVs, you don't feel as if you're really missing out. The XL in the moniker might stand for eXtra Long or eXtra Luxurious, depending on your perspective.
True, the interior is a bit snug compared with bigger sport utes. That third row of seats is ideal for small children, but uncomfortable for full-size adults. Yes, seating can technically accommodate seven people, but over time most passengers will probably prefer less.
On the other hand, you won't feel as if you need an escort vehicle when tooling around town. This Suzuki is nimble and maneuverable, and feels just right for lugging real-world loads. We folded all the rear seats down and packed the 75 cubic feet of cargo area chock full of luggage, and it swallowed up enough stuff for a long weekend trip.
