The equipment installed on the Boxster S is not there for frivolous reasons. (Well, except for the cupholders.) Last year's improvements to the engine added horsepower and torque while increasing the sensual experience of the drive. There is nothing in the world more effective to the central nervous system than to be behind the wheel of a Boxster S while tromping on the accelerator pedal. At once you hear the throaty induction system from the air intake, located just inches from your ear, adding the exotic exhaust note that is unmistakably the Porsche 6-cylinder. We have found the optimum metaphysical experience.
Oh sure, there are Ferraris and Lamborghinis that thrill—but, for a mere $51,600 (base MSRP), you can have the satisfaction of more than 100 Gs in your pocket and the art of driving in your drive.
Color-matched interiors are very Porsche-like, and there's even a lighted glovebox.
The development of electronic controls and equipment hasn't been left out of the Boxster. Porsche has equipped this automobile with a stability control system, which can be disengaged by a flick of a switch. This is particularly important while having the aforementioned Mr. Haywood performing hot laps in the car. For a guy like him, it only slows progress. For the average driver it will probably help keep your car out of the body shop and, more importantly, may keep you away from medical facilities.
Creature comforts are not lost for those who desire them. Color-matched interiors are much more Porsche-like. A navigation system, which takes up considerable room in the dash, is an option. And, while these systems are becoming more popular, we feel it takes away from the overall experience of the drive. A good ol' paper map from the auto club can do much to add to your adventure.
Porsche has advanced the persona of owning one of their sports cars beyond the gold chain and open-shirted gorillas of the Eighties. Today, while there are a few who purchase a Porsche for the status, most owners seek a truer sense of the experience. They are indeed in search of the fine art of driving. (www.porsche.com)
