The Util-track system is arguably the best tie-down setup any manufacturer has ever built into a pickup.
Styling is always a subjective element. With the exception of the rather generic (and passenger car-like) Nissan grille, this truck needs not apologize. Apparently the grille was a "must-do" from the head of Nissan Styling; it's supposedly required for 'consistent corporate identity.' That said, overall, the Titan is a handsome brute whose unfamiliar silhouette turned a few heads during our drive. The abbreviated hood gives it a "Mack Truck-like," dare we say, macho appearance from the side, and it permits a bigger cabin, yet it does not detract from the truck's presence. The tall bedsides are handsome and useful. The bedside hatch is so clever, we can't help but wonder why no one offered it before. And the Util-track system is arguably the best tie-down setup any manufacturer has ever built into a pickup.
It's hard to make a comparison without driving the Titan back-to-back with its rivals but these are our impressions. Ford's new F-150 is still the best overall performer; Dodge's Hemi has the cachet and the good looks, but isn't quite as polished as the Ford. Chevrolet builds a strong, predictable, balanced platform with no styling to speak of, and Toyota's not yet in the game. The Titan bristles with fine features and is definitely a contender in this class, once you can get beyond blind brand loyalty.
Trucks are still trucks, with in-bred ride and handling characteristics that you can't tune out. This one is comfortable; it stops and steers well, despite its bulk, and it would be pleasurable on a long haul. Acceleration is brisk, without much intrusive engine noise, and the transmission selector gate is useful for selecting the exact gear when you need a 3/4 twisty, hilly road configuration. Once they're ramped up, Nissan expects to sell 100,000 Titans annually. They're not bothering with regular cab models; they are competitively priced, they offer Japanese brand reliability and they will appeal to those who have made a truck a part of their active lifestyles, and isn't wedded to Chevy, Ford or Dodge. We think they'll exceed that figure. (www.nissanusa.com)
