Fortified for all-terrain luxury

One LX 470 attribute that never seems to change is its flexibility. Seating for eight is standard, configured in three tiers: Dual power front captains chairs, an adult-friendly 60/40 split/folding second-row bench and a 50/50 third row that's scaled for the smaller of stature yet can be folded flat, folded to the side or removed entirely, depending on the people/cargo payload being carried. Capacity of the rear bay can be varied from 19.1 to 90.4 cubic feet and the large perimeter cutout on its 70/30 horizontally divided gate facilitates loading chores.
The serene inner sanctum of the LX 470 is one of the most richly appointed interiors of any SUV in the world.
Performance output for the LX 470 is 235 hp from its 4.7-liter DOHC V-8, yet the real story on this smooth operator is in the torque department. It churns out a maximum of 320 lb.-ft. at 3,400 rpm—and 80 percent of that total is on hand from a mere 1,100 revs. Putting that muscle to even better use is a new 5-speed automatic transmission that replaces the previous 4-speed unit. Motive force is shipped to all four wheels via a dual-range transfer case and a center differential that doles it out in a 50/50 split. In addition to the extra cog and wider ratio spread in the new-for-'03 gearbox, the formula also includes a slightly taller differential gear (4.10:1 vs. 4.30:1). Collectively, these match-ups put a bit more sprightliness in this primo SUV's gait. While EPA city mileage estimate remains at 13 mpg, they also help raise the LX 470's highway estimate rating from 16 to 17 while still allowing it to pull up to a 5,000-lb. trailer.
Beneath the LX 470 is a chassis package designed to ensure it's as capable—and comfortable—exploring the outback as it is on a long-distance freeway cruise. Central element is rugged steel frame that uses nine crossmembers to ensure exceptional strength. Suspension specifics include double wishbones and torsion bars up front, a 4-link live axle mounted on conventional coils in the rear and stability bars at both ends. From there on, an assortment of sophisticated electronic controls adds competence as well as convenience to the mix. On road, Vehicle Skid Control and traction control are complemented by 4-position shocks that can be tuned for Sport or Comfort. Off road, the LX 470's ride height can be adjusted, allowing the normal 9.8-inch ground clearance to be upped by 1.2 inches in front and 1.8 inches and approach/departure angles to rise from 30/23 degrees to 32/26, should the need arise.
Capacity of the rear bay can be varied from 19.1 to 90.4 cubic feet.
Suitable stopping power for this stellar SUV comes from 4-wheel disc brakes that add new Electronic Brake Force Distribution circuitry to the existing Brake Assist feature. These well-modulated binders now work in concert with new 275/60HR18 M+S tires that replace the previous 275/70HR16 rubber. One final bit of techno wizardry involves the fitment of Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) to the LX 470's quick-ratio power rack-and-pinion system. Computer-controlled, VGRS employs an in-line electromechanical actuator that effectively increases the amount of steering input to the front wheels during low speed (sub-15 mph) maneuvers. In its maximum mode, VGRS trims the number of turns lock-to-lock from 3.5 to 2.4. That kind of variation can make a huge difference when you're threading an LX 470 through some crowded parking lot—or using it to back a boat trailer down a narrow launch ramp.
The Lexus LX 470 stands out as a world-class, go-anywhere cruiser, and the 2004 model merely serves to solidify that status. Buyers who prioritize living life in the good lane will find even more to like here—no matter where the road may ultimately lead. (www.lexus.com)
