2004 Lexus GS 430
Masterful and mellifluous

Despite its serious performance credentials, the GS 430 sacrifices virtually nothing in the way of legitimate luxury trappings. All of the clever noise- and vibration-attenuation tricks that have become a hallmark of the Lexus brand are present, making the GS 430 one of the most refined high-performance sedans on the market today. Price of entry starts at $47,975 plus $625 in destination. Though the GS 430's price has barely increased for 2004, a one-touch power moonroof, six-disc in-dash CD changer and perforated leather-trimmed seating and heated front seats are standard equipment.
With 300 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque, the GS 430 sprints from 0-60 mph in just 5.8 seconds.
The GS 430 delivers a formidable list of comfort and convenience standards, headed by dual-zone climate control with automatic smog-sensing circuitry, Optitron instrumentation, dual 10-way power seats, power windows/locks/mirrors, and keyless remote entry with anti-theft system. You also get leather upholstery with California walnut accent trim, power tilt/telescoping steering column, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, HomeLink programmable garage door opener, and an AM/FM/cassette sound system. On the safety front, the GS 430 comes with dual front and front/side airbags; front side-curtain bags, 3-point seatbelts throughout with pretensioners and force-limiters on the front units, and HID headlamps.
In addition to the wheel/tire upgrade, our test car was fitted with a rear spoiler, a trunk mat and a DVD-based Navigation System/Mark Levinson Audio package.
Well-engineered and well fortified, the GS 430 can more than hold its own when compared to other prime players in its prestigious peer set. If you're after an engaging road car that doesn't force you to make concessions in every day driving comfort, the GS 430 may very well be an excellent fit for your needs. (www.lexus.com)
