2004 Infiniti G35x
Traction: anytime, anywhere, and in a sport sedan

Truth is, with continued improvements, computer-controlled all-wheel-drive systems like these are getting lighter in weight; they work seamlessly, and they provide the security and grip of a 4WD SUV with handling advantages you get in very few sport utilities. Although some drivers might say they miss a manual transmission (not available on the G35x), the manu-matic can be shifted from gear to gear with aplomb, you can always choose the gear you want, and the sensation is not unlike shifting without a clutch. Unlike some competitive systems, the G35x actively changes and transfers optimum torque between the front and rear wheels when needed, with very acceptable fuel economy.
Best of all, the AWD G35 is about $6,000 less than a comparably equipped BMW 330Xi, and about $1,500 less than an Audi A4 Quattro. For model year 2004, the G35x Sedan Leather AWD package comes standard with a virtual "alphabet soup" of acronyms, including the aforementioned VDC, EBD, BA, and ABS. There's a driver's 8-way power seat with manual adjustable lumbar support, a 4-way power seat for the front passenger, leather-appointed seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls. Heated front seats are also part of the package, as are Xenon headlights and P215/55SR17 all-weather tires.
The G35x actively changes and transfers optimum torque between the front and rear wheels when needed, with very acceptable fuel economy.
Special packages include Sunroof, which features a dual-glass sliding sunroof with one-touch open/close; Navigation, with a 6.5-inch LCD pop-up screen GPS-based nav system and tilt screen monitor; and Bose, with a 222-watt audio system, seven speakers and a 6-disc/in-dash CD changer and cassette. Front, side and curtain airbags are all included.
Underway, the Infiniti's steering is sharp and acceleration is crisp. You won't miss the steering heaviness and suspension stiffness of some German rivals and, at the same time, you're spared the numb on-center feel and over-boosted assist of many Japanese competitors. The Infiniti is a nimble performer, with very little body sway. Its sticker price is enticing, and Infiniti's reputation for reliability comes standard.
Many makes are joining the AWD ranks: Volvo and Jaguar are already offering this feature, and AWD is an option on Chrysler's new 300C. Cadillac, Acura and Lexus will reportedly follow suit. Infiniti is promoting its G35x as a sport sedan for the independent-minded person. If you're considering an all-wheel-drive four-door, we recommend you put this stylish, technically advanced sedan on your comparison list. It's a sensible alternative to any of its European competitors. (www.infiniti.com)
