As before, the 3.5-liter V-6 engine develops 194 horsepower, working with a 5-speed Shiftronic automatic transmission that permits manual gear changes (if desired). Hyundai's claim to deliver a lot of car for a moderate sum of money is entirely accurate in the case of the XG. In a daylong drive, the XG350L proved to be excellent all around. Smooth riding yet well controlled, the XG felt at least as good in ride comfort as a Camry or Maxima. On reasonably smooth pavement, this sedan's suspension absorbs or tones down nearly all trouble spots. You can feel the imperfections, true, but just barely for the most part. Despite yielding a ride that suggests luxury, the suspension is a trifle firmer than those on some midsize sedans. Actually, it comes across as an appealing compromise.
Powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine working with a 5-speed Shiftronic automatic transmission, the XG350's handling is smooth and controlled.
No one is likely to mistake the XG's steering and handling for that of a sports car, but it responds with a satisfying degree of preciseness. No less important, the XG350L is exceptionally easy to drive and to control. Whether on the freeway or winding through twisting two-lane roads, Hyundai's largest sedan tends to stay right in its place on the pavement, without excessive effort.
Capable performance rounds out the list of benefits. Though acceleration falls short of overpowering, an XG is fully confident when the gas pedal needs to be pushed. Hyundai's Shiftronic transmission reacts quickly and positively, yet smoothly, even through mountain roads. Though quiet-running ordinarily, the engine emits a slight snarl when pushed hard in manual-gear change mode.
Sophisticated in appearance, with a presence that suggests considerably more dollars, the XG350 and XG350L have few significant flaws. Hyundai's marketing goal is to make the XG350 better known. With pricing remaining the same as in 2003, we're sure the good word will get out. (www.hyundai.com)
