2004 Hyundai XG350
More sophisticated, refined and comfortable

Like Kia, its sister company, Hyundai emphasizes the value of its products compared to the competition. Both South Korean automakers offer a range of sedans, from mini-dimensioned to midsize. Adding the upscale midsize XG300 sedan for 2000 gave Hyundai a model with some extra amenities positioned above the Sonata. Installing a bigger engine in 2001, accompanied by a name change to XG350, delivered a bit of a performance boost to complement the sedan's comforts and conveniences.
At first, according to product planning manager Scott Margason, marketers asked themselves: "Would America accept a $23,499 Hyundai—" Selling more than expected, the answer turned out to be "yes." Yet, the XG was never intended to be a high-volume seller. Mainly, it "makes a brand statement," Margason said. Hyundai targets buyers who might otherwise favor a Toyota Avalon or Camry, or a Nissan Maxima. Kia's new upscale Amanti will not be a serious rival, Margason said, because there is "quite a bit of separation between the (two) brand images."
For 2004, the XG350 gains a fresh look front and rear coupled with minor trim and functional enhancements.
Measuring five inches longer overall than its Sonata companion that uses the same basic platform, the XG350 has a more formal appearance. Hyundai calls it "classic" and "sophisticated." For 2004, the XG350 gains a fresh look front and rear coupled with minor trim changes and some functional enhancements. Headlights are said to be more "crystal-like," and subtle grille revisions include the addition of more slats. A new air dam aims to produce a wider, more stable appearance. New projector-type fog lamps are included. A wider waistline molding decorates the body, and the rear license plate has moved to the decklid. This year's taillights incorporate a vertical backup lamp, and an LED brake light has been installed.
Front-brake rotors are bigger for 2004. Antilock brakes, traction control and side-impact airbags are standard. So are leather upholstery and automatic temperature control. About 90 percent of sales are for the abundantly-equipped XG350L, which includes a moonroof, woodgrain steering wheel, memory system, tilt-down mirror, and heated front seats. Inside, a little woodgrain trim has been deleted and what remains has a new pattern. New 12-spoke, 16-inch wheels go on the step-up XG350L model, which also gets a 210-watt Infinity sound system.
White-on-black gauges are big and easy to read. Woodgrain trim is attractive and not overdone.
Seats are firm, with good support and helpful power adjustments, but rather short bottoms and modest side bolstering. Headroom is not huge with a sunroof installed, but only the truly tall are likely to be troubled. White-on-black gauges are big and easy to read. Woodgrain trim is attractive and not overdone, and the ample glovebox is easy to reach. Visibility is good all around. Though not exactly spacious, the back seat is reasonably comfortable. Headroom is ample in all three positions, but the center spot lacks leg space. The wide trunk is easy to load though a bit shallow inside.
