Remember, not long ago, when Chrysler's "cab forward" design—sleek, rounded and handsome, with steeply sloping windshields and a surprisingly roomy interior—was leading edge design? Critics praised and loved it so much they chastised other makers for not emulating it. Well, times have changed. Others have gone their own ways—some good, some less so—and have not copied Chrysler's cab-forward look. And now Chrysler itself appears about to embark on a new design direction.
While most of the company's '04 passenger-car fleet still wears the pleasing cab-forward proportions, its recent full-size V-8-powered rear-drive concept sedans and crossover wagons sport very different, more upright and broad-shouldered shapes. So, those who like the current Chrysler style—as we do—should love this 2004 Concorde Limited. With its curvy contours, fine-spoke alloy wheels and Ferrari-like grille, we think it looks terrific and drives equally well. And its $29,105 base price strikes us as just about right. If you agree, you might want to consider acquiring one while it's still available.
Overview
All '04 Concordes have V-6 power, four-speed automatic transaxles, four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. Their complement of safety and security features include "next-generation" driver and front-passenger air bags; LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child seat anchor system, which eases installation of compatible aftermarket child seats; child-protection rear door locks and an internal emergency trunk release. Also available are supplemental side impact air bags for front occupants and a vehicle-theft deterrent system with Sentry Key engine immobilizer.
A choice of three Concorde models is offered for 2004: LX, LXi and Limited. The cloth-trimmed base LX is powered by a 200-hp all-aluminum 2.7-liter, 24-valve V-6. Standard amenities include power windows (driver one-touch open), speed control with steering-wheel switches, tilt steering column and P225/60R16 Goodyear Eagle GA all-season touring tires.
The mid-range LXi has all that plus a 232-hp 24-valve aluminum 3.5-liter V-6, leather-trimmed seats, automatic temperature control and an overhead console with four-function trip computer, compass, temperature display and Homelink universal garage door opener.
