Inside, the driver faces a 6-instrument cluster that includes a supercharger boost gauge.
Use of a direct-mounted air-conditioning compressor is said to reduce vibration. Powder-metal connecting rods, rather than the usual cast-iron construction, promises greater durability as well as reduced internal engine weight.
The Supercharged SS coupe sports what Chevrolet calls "especially aggressive" styling touches, including full-perimeter ground-effects body components and integrated fog lamps. A racing-inspired spoiler brings up the rear, sitting above dual stainless-steel exhaust tips.
Chevrolet engineers worked with the GM Performance Division to develop the Supercharged SS, which is one of several SS (Super Sport) vehicles, including the new Impala SS sedan. Chassis and suspension enhancements, including stiffer front/rear spring rates, promise a sportier ride and handling qualities, with improved body roll through corners. Ride height at the rear has been lowered by 10 millimeters, and thicker front and rear stabilizer bars have been installed.
Performance in a Supercharged SS Monte Carlo is much like that of the Impala SS sedan: subtle rather than sensational. You can expect almost fearsome acceleration from a standstill, though powertrain response for passing and merging is less stunning.
Packing a supercharged rendition of the familiar 3.8-liter V-6 engine, this topline SS produces 240 hp at 5200 rpm.
Quiet on the road, the hottest Monte Carlo serves as an excellent highway cruiser. Adding the supercharged V-6 can give the driver an extra dose of confidence, whether it's called upon only sporadically or regularly.
